General Instructions
- Lock and unlock pouch carefully.
- Always follow the correct methods of pouch application.
- Always check to see if the stoma has increased or decreased in size by measuring it with a measuring guide.
- The ostomy appliance should be changed immediately if the complaints of burning, itching or if leaking is noted.
- Whatever type of appliance is used, cut the flange 3mm larger than the stoma measurement size.
- Cut the border smoothly in a continuous manner with curved scissors because rough edges can cause the injury to stoma.
- There should be no gaps between the hole and your stoma.
- Any creases, folds, or gaps in your wafer/flange should be sealed with stoma paste to prevent leakage.
- Flatus causes a pouch to balloon out so open the clamp and release the flatus in toilet.
- Appliance may be changed most easily when the bowel is relatively quite, such as early morning 4 hours after a meal.
- Monitor for possible nutritional problems, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, skin breakdown at the peristomal area and weight loss or excessive pain.
- Minimal stoma bleeding can be managed with applying cold water/ice cube soaked gauze/cloth.
- Never apply anything other than water over the stoma, including lotions and disinfectants.
- Avoid removing the pouch frequently to reduce the risk of pain and injury to the peristomal skin.
- Use belt while physical activity.
- Appliances should be stored in a cool, dry and airy place away from direct sunlight and extremes of temperature.
- Normal stoma bag life is 5-7days if not leaks in between.
- After 6 to 8 weeks of surgery, the stoma will mature and will no longer change size but it will still be necessary to measure every time while pouch changing.
